Infection Control: An Introduction

Altura Learning (Formerly Aged Care Channel) is proud to present their course Infection Control: An Introduction, detailing the key principles of good infection prevention and control. This new ACC course teaches how infectious agents spread and identifies simple precautions for use in the home environment.

Infection prevention and control is essential and is the responsibility of all staff providing care to older people. Infections may be serious, and, in some cases, life threatening. Infections may worsen underlying medical conditions and adversely affect these clients’ recovery. Infection prevention is about protecting the older people in our care, however, it must also extend to protecting our staff members from the risk of infection.

This new Altura Learning course, available from March 23, 2018, is tailored to the needs of home care workers, offering tips to prevent the spread of infection and covering real infection control issues encountered when working in a person’s home. In Infection Control: An Introduction you will study the correct use of personal protective equipment and learn how to perform correct hand hygiene and the Five Moments of Hand Hygiene. This course is supported with a suite of learning resources designed to help you implement these strategies for infection control and includes a hand hygiene skills assessment.

Learning Outcomes:

• Describe the different types of infectious agents (micro-organisms) and the harm they can cause
• Explain why older people are at an increased risk from infections
• Outline considerations when promoting infection control in a home care environment
• Distinguish the links in the chain of infection and identify the role of standard precautions in how to break those links.
